1ST/2ND GRD (7U-8U) Lesson Plans

These lesson plans should be used for all 7U-8U Recreation teams. Please be aware that it is okay to use the same activities or lesson plans more than once during a season. Additionally, coaches should feel free to “mix and match” the activities from the various lesson plans.

Training sessions for this age-group should be activity based. It is not necessary to utilize a progressive session for this age-group.

Minnesota Youth Soccer Association: Training Sessions

7U-8U (1st/2nd Grd) Training Session Checklist

  • Session lasts 40-50 minutes

  • Session begins and ends on time

  • Soccer balls are properly inflated

  • Players are properly equipped (i.e. shin pads)

  • NO laps, NO lines, NO lectures (keep the players active)

  • Each activity starts quickly

  • Activities are player-center and not coach-centered

  • Players have fun and look forward to the next session : )

"In a 4v4 match the opposition for the player with the ball is generally 1v7 even though partner play is now emerging. So during a match, the players need to focus on the task at hand, trying to control the ball. Unfortunately, they are often distracted by adults giving advice from around the field. Now they have to make a choice: either play the ball or listen to the adults. If the adults want to help the children play their best, they need to be quiet while watching the children’s game. It is let everyone know it is OK to play swarm ball at the U-6 and U- 8 age groups." -- US Youth Soccer Player Development Model

Volunteer coaches are key to the success of the program. We need volunteers! Without adequate volunteers, rosters will be limited and children will be turned away. If you are interested in coaching, please indicate when you register your child. A preseason coaching clinic is offered to all volunteer coaches as well as a practice plans to help coaches create a fun environment where kids can improve their skills.
