FAQs for referees

  • How old do I need to be to be a certified referee?

    A. All referee certification is organized by the Minnesota State Referee Committee. U.S.

Soccer Policy is that the certification is open to those 13 years of age or older at the

    time of creating an account.

HOWEVER, you may referee in-house/recreational games if you are under the age of 13.

  • I am certified. Now what?

    A. You will want to reach out to Tyler at tyler@matassigning.com to introduce yourself.

From there, Tyler will send you a link to be added to the MAT Assigning software, Notch.

  • How are assignments made?

    A. There are multiple methods to receiving game assignments: setting your availability

and waiting for assignment based on that availability, requesting games, or responding

to an email with open games listed.

  • How much will I earn?

    A. Referees earn anywhere between $25 and $90, dependent on age, level and position

(either center referee or assistant referee).

  • How often am I paid?

    A. You will be paid for your work VERY FAST! Work a game, submit a game report, wait

for approval (usually same day) and your funds will be transferred to your Notch wallet

for disbursement to your bank account.

  • Who decides when, where, and how much I work?

    A. You! One benefit to this job is that you get to work when you want, where you want

    as often as you want.

  • I have other questions. Who can I contact?

    A. We want to answer your questions. Please reach out to us and we’ll get back to you

    quickly.

  • Will I receive a 1099?

Maybe. Each individual club issues compensation to referees; MAT does not. If you earn more than $600 with any individual club, you will receive a 1099 from that club.

  • What if I show up to a game and there are no teams?

You will be paid. Be sure to notify MAT Assigning staff if this happens.

  • What if I only want to be an assistant referee?

That is ok! We take experience and comfort level into account when making assignments.
